Slow going but should be picking up

It has been slow going with work on 'When Ships Mutiny'. I'm about half-way through the first draft. I haven't had much time to write with work and family issues taking priority. Now that I'm going to have to stay up late at night as I work into a night-shift schedule I should have a lot more time to write. I will soon be working 6 days a week 12 hours a day for a month which might put a serious dent into my ability to work on my book. I don't like that at all.

I've received a couple of emails and a review on Amazon where people have compared myself to Asimov! As far as I'm concerned, that is the greatest compliment a reader could give an author. I was floored because I don't consider myself in his league. For someone to say I write like Asimov was a compliment that simply made my day. I do listen to my readers and I will try to write the books they are looking to read. I just wish I had the time!

A sad day

It has been a very sad last few days. We had to say goodbye to our cat. It hasn't been easy for myself or my wife. Neither of us wanted to go home afterwards and so we went to the bookstore where I buried myself in my novel. I managed to write about 7 pages. I now have about 105 pages in When Ships Mutiny. Sales of the Galactic Alliance series are still doing okay but seem to be slowly dropping. I still plan on working on a 3 or 4 book series to add to the GA series of books. Working 12-hour days though sure doesn't leave much time to write.

Writer's group and WSM

We had a large group show up for the writer's group meeting last Saturday. Everyone except myself read something (I had a surprise birthday party to attend and so I had to bow out). We have some really good talent in our group! One of our members read a short scifi that I thought was excellant. She has never written scifi before.

I have managed to get some writing done on WSM and today I should be able to write more. I've just started chapter 15. This book is slow going because I haven't quite figured out how to get to where I need to be. But, as I put words into the box the story is working itself in the right direction. I might surprise myself and finish it this year. Then I can start work on the Galactic Alliance - Cybernetic Agent series.

Some thoughts about feedback, reviews, and emails

Recently, I have received a few negative reviews. Now, negative reviews are okay as long as they are true. One individual decided to post a very negative review without even reading the story. He did so from the free preview chapters and proceeded to make a claim that he would no longer pay for so called professional authors on Kindle who put out books with grammatical errors. He claims the errors begin at chapter two. Well, I've had several people read chapter two and no errors were found. Amazon won't remove the review even though it is false. I've also never claimed to be a professional author. I've decided not to comment on his review as it could only start a war of words with someone who obviously not only has a beef against me but who seems to know nothing about writing a proper review. A review should be about the story. There are plenty of people who disagree with him as evidenced by the number of 5-star reviews.

Another person wrote that she could not continue because I seemed to paint the U.S. government in a bad light and I was saying that global warming was true. After some research, I found out that this person works for the government. Her review now makes perfect sense. If she had continued to read it though she would have found out why the government did the things they do. As for global warming - I never said what caused it. It is a known fact that the Earth is warming up. Whether it's from human activity or simply a cycle the planet goes through is anyone's guess but the fact remains that it is happening and nothing we can do will stop it.

I have been receiving a steady stream of very positive emails from readers of the GA series. Many have said they want more and I intend to deliver. I plan on going back and pulling 'The Elite of the Alliance' from my hard drive and reworking it into a two or three book series set in the GA universe. I plan on having more emphasis on alien cultures and you will get to know the central figure of this series quite well.

I do take all feedback seriously and if the reader has something constructive to complain about I will use the opportunity to improve myself as a reader. For those who simply write a negative review simply to try to slow my sales - - - well, all I can say is that it's not working. Grow up and act like an adult.

Having a hard time finding time

My hopes for being able to spend all day Saturday working on WSM were scrubbed when I got called into work. Now I'm on 12 hour days which leaves me virtually no time at all to write. The power plant had tripped and they called everyone in. It is now coming back online and I've found a little bit of time to do some writing. I'm on page 78 and beginning to make some progress. So far it's looking pretty good.

I've started getting some more positive emails from fans of the Galactic Alliance series. Sales continue to be strong and I really enjoy hearing back from those who've read the books.

I put my application in for the launchpad writer's retreat sponsored by NASA. I really hope I am selected and I'm looking forward to it. You can see what it's all about by going to:
